The First 24 Hours
Your artist will cover your fresh tattoo with a bandage or protective wrap. Leave this on for the time recommended by your artist — typically 2 to 4 hours. When it's time to remove it, wash your hands thoroughly first.
Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Pat dry with a clean paper towel — never use a cloth towel, as fibres can cling to the fresh skin and introduce bacteria.
Days 2–7: The Peeling Phase
During the first week, your tattoo will begin to peel. This is completely normal — it's your skin's natural healing process. You may notice thin flakes of coloured skin coming off. Do not pick or scratch at it.
Apply a thin layer of unscented moisturiser or a dedicated tattoo aftercare balm 2–3 times daily. Keep the layer thin — over-moisturising can suffocate the skin and slow healing.
What to avoid during this phase
- Swimming pools, spas, and saunas
- Direct sunlight or tanning beds
- Tight clothing that rubs against the tattoo
- Submerging the tattoo in water (showers are fine, baths are not)
Weeks 2–4: Settling In
The outer layers of skin will have healed by now, but the deeper layers are still repairing. Your tattoo may look slightly cloudy or dull during this period — this is temporary.

Continue moisturising daily and keep the area out of prolonged sun exposure. Once fully healed, always apply SPF 50+ sunscreen over your tattoo when spending time outdoors. UV rays are the number one cause of tattoo fading over time.
Long-Term Care
A well-cared-for tattoo can look vibrant for decades. Here are habits that make the difference:

- Hydrate your skin — drink plenty of water and moisturise regularly
- Protect from the sun — sunscreen is your tattoo's best friend
- Avoid harsh exfoliants over tattooed areas
- Touch-up sessions — if you notice fading after a few years, book a touch-up with your artist
When to Seek Help
Contact your artist or a medical professional if you experience:
- Excessive swelling or redness beyond the first few days
- Pus or unusual discharge
- A rash or raised bumps around the tattoo
- Fever or signs of infection
At Felicidad Tattoo Studio, we provide detailed aftercare instructions after every session and are always available to answer your questions during the healing process.
